Ernest Bennett have been manufacturing wide bandsaws for over 50 years and we pride ourselves on the quality and service we give to our customers. In order to give the best product to our customers we offer our bandsaws in a choice of 3 types of steel, all supplied from the Bohler Uddeholm group, renowned as being the best bandsaw steel in the world. Uddeholm have been the leaders in bandsaw strip technology since 1886 and Ernest Bennett is now their largest customer for bandsaw steel in the UK with purchases of over 50 tonnes of steel per year. The benchmark for bandsaw steel is Uddeholm's 148 grade, or "UDDEHOLM 000" as it is better known. This is the steel most suitable for swaged bandsaws as it is tough enough to allow the teeth to be swaged without cracking and breaking and is also suitable for tipping. Swaging in particular makes very exacting demands on toughness. The steels toughness, or ductility are more important than its hardness. The bandsaw steel must also have good resistance to wear if the life of the teeth is to be prolonged. Since resistance to wear is dependent on hardness the steel should be as hard as possible, but not too hard so as to become brittle and unable to withstand swaging. Because wood bandsaw blades are subject to severe impact stresses while in use the steel must have good impact resistance. The steel must also have good resistance to fatigue as the saw must withstand repeated bending and straightening over the bandsaw wheels. The steel must also have good straightness and flatness, combined with good elasticity and resilience. Uddeholm 000 is the best steel for meeting all of these demands.
However, Uddeholm 000 is not the only steel available from the Bohler Uddeholm group. With the development of tipped bandsaws some of the characteristics of Uddeholm 000 are not required and we move to "Uddeholm 170". This steel has a higher hardness and tensile strength, which allows it to hold tension longer and cut more accurately. With the stellite tips it allows the saw to run for upto 4 times longer on the machine giving much better productivity in a high precision, high speed mill. With the higher hardness however this grade of steel is not suitable for swaged blades.
The third Bohler Uddeholm steel we supply is Martin Miller steel. This is an admirable alternative to Uddeholm 000, but at a slightly lower price. Martin Miller joined the Bohler Uddeholm group in 1997, but was founded in 1782 and started producing saw steel in 1869. It does not have the well known name of Uddeholm but is part of the same group and produces excellent quality steel.
Ernest Bennett use the latest technology for producing and servicing bandsaw blades. The teeth are pressed out using a CNC controlled press feed and cut-to-length line, ensuring accuracy of pitch and position of the weld. The welded joint is tempered to 460 deg C to prevent cracking on the weld. The saws are then tensioned on automatic machinery before a manual inspection of the joint and the back edge. We then use Mig tipping machines to melt the stellite tip on to the teeth which gives a better adhesion to the saw to reduce tip failure and reduce the porosity of the stellite. The saws are then ground on CNC wet grinding machines before a final inspection and being packaged for despatch to the customer. Bandsaw operators should be aware that a bandsaw has a tendancy to stretch during the first time of use and it is for this reason that it is recommended a new saw should be run in on the machine the first time it is used to prevent damage to the saw. Our recommendation is to run the saw without cutting for half an hour, then light cutting for 2 hours and then have the saw serviced. It is also recommended to follow the machine manufacturers maintenance schedule in order to prevent damage to the saw blade. For your information we have listed our recommendations below in our troubleshooting and maintenance guides.

Toothed, Welded & Tensioned As with toothed and welded, but with the bandsaw being tensioned prior to despatch |

High Precision Ground Stellite (HPG) Stellite tipped by plasma welding technology and ground on the latest CNC wet grinders. 'HPG' is our most popular format as people recognise the advantages of longer running times and smoother sawn finish. |
