Ernest Bennett founded Ernest Bennett (Sheffield) Ltd in 1956 to service and maintain all types of industrial saw blades and cutting tools, primarily wide bandsaws and circular saws, for which Sheffield was the world centre with its' strong steel making tradition. The company progressed into manufacturing shortly afterwards. In 1964 the need arose for a facility in the North of England and Ernest opened Ernest Bennett & Co. (Darlington) Ltd with his nephew, Rob Maxey, to service the needs of the North of England, Scotland and Ireland. With over 50 years experience in manufacturing and servicing saw blades Ernest Bennett are the largest manufacturer of industrial saws in the UK, with over 100 people employed at the two sites. We are committed to providing Industrial Quality sawblades to all our customers, whether they are DIY enthusiasts or high production industrial manufacturers. Our commitment to quality and service remain the same and we have continually invested in the most up to date equipment and facilities to enable us to achieve our objectives.
We use only the best quality materials, from established European suppliers, to produce saw blades with precision and durability. Our circular saws range from 75mm to 1200mm in diameter and are used in the timber, plastic, non-ferrous metal and steel industries. We also supply steel bodies for diamond coating for the glass, stone and metal working industries. All our blades are computer programmed on our unique Cad/Cam system and precision laser cut from premium 75Cr1 steel and 80CrV steel, hardened to 42-44 Rockwell C. The laser cut slots counter the expansion of the blade caused by heat and the centrifugal forces encountered during cutting. These centrifugal forces are also counteracted by the precise run-out and tensioning procedures, designed to reduce vibration and noise and give a true, quiet cut. The tips we use for our carbide saws are micro-fine cobalt grades, specifically suited to the application and for our industrial panel saw range we use a sub-micron chromium grade to give even longer performance in packs of laminated chip-board and MDF. Precise grinding is carried out on Vollmer CNC grinding machines to the required tooth form for the application. Many of the saws listed below are carried in stock, however, we are a specialist manufacturer of saw blades, so we can manufacture saws to customers specific requirements, for all cutting applications, usually within a lead time of 3 weeks.
For our bandsaw blades we are the largest supplier of Uddeholm steel in the UK with purchases of over 60 tonnes of steel per year and have supplied Uddeholm 000 as our premium brand for over 40 years. Most dimensions of steel are carried in stock and we aim to give a 1 to 2 week delivery on finished bandsaw blades. We supply coils of toothed strip, for customers to cut to length and weld to their required size. Toothed and welded, for saw service companies or sawmills with their own saw maintenance shop. Ready for use swaged and sharpened or stellite tipped saws. All of which can be suitably packed for shipment throughout the UK or overseas. We currently have export markets in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South America.
New factory for Ernest Bennett Saws
Ernest Bennett have been manufacturing and servicing saw blades since 1956 at their purpose-built factory near Sheffield, but having outgrown the 1 acre site have now moved to a new purpose built 30,000 ft factory on 2.5 acres.
The new factory was commissioned in March 2008, to be built at the former Dinnington Colliery site, on 2.5 acres of land purchased from Renaissance South Yorkshire. Building commenced in May, using local Sheffield builder David Farmery, and was completed in November 2008.
The move was planned for the second week in December and went relatively smoothly considering there were 170 machines to move. The Chairman, Martyn Bennett, says "the entire workforce worked especially hard to keep production going as much as possible and get the machines moved and up and running again. The move was completed in 2 weeks, which took us up to Christmas. Full production was running again when we returned in January."
The new facility has improved Ernest Bennett's production capabilities for wide bandsaws and TCT circular saws, with improved work flow leading to leaner manufacturing processes and increased stock levels. The new factory is 75% bigger than the old facility and has plenty of room for expansion in the future.
